Dear Dr. Winslow: C o n firm in g c o n v e r s a t i o n l a s t week i n hew York on th e su b je c t o f the N ational S afety Council p u b lic ity on Abrasive Pressure Cleaning, I believe the in tro d u cto ry paragraph or paragraphs should take cognizance of the fa c t th at several kinds of abrasive g rit are absolutely necessary, depending on the m a te ria l being cleaned and the fin is h re quired. I gained the im pression in reading the o rig in al re p o r t o f Dr. G reenburg' s Committee th a t th e re seemed to be an" u n d e r ly in g th o u g h t t h a t s t e e l g r i t o r s t e e l s h o t co u ld be used exclusively. S te e l a b r a s iv e i s i n two fo rm s-a " g r i t " , which under th e m icroscope shows rough edges, and "shot",w hich i s in l i t t l e rounded p e lle ts s im ila r to o rdinary le a d shot. 11 ab rasiv e pressure cleaning media are reclaim ed and used over again, and g r i t a f t e r going th ru th e machine a few tim es becomes more l i k e s h o t a s th e rough edges g e t hammered down. The e f f e c t o f sand on a s u rfa c e i s a s l i g h t c u ttin g leav in g a rougher su rfa ce (m icroscopic view) than does the s t e e l v/hich hammers o r peens th e s u rfa c e . I n th e c lean in g o f aluminum and a l l o y c a s t i n g s , sand i s much to be p r e f e r r e d as i t gives a b e tte r fin is h to the eye (microscope not needed to determ ine t h i s ) and in the case o f aluminum i t tak es two to three times as long to clean a casting with s te e l as i t cioes w ith sand, making 'th e c o s t f a r more econom ical w ith sand a b r a s i v e a s 'w e ll a s g i v i n g a s o - c a l l e d s a t i n f i n i s h . Surfaces to which p a in t o r enamels, p a r tic u la r ly the l a t t e r , are to be applied w ill hold the p a in t b e tte r i f sand i s used fo r c le a n in g , owing to th e aforem entioned rough su r fa c e as c o n tr a s te d with th e peened s u rfa c e g iv en by s t e e l shot cleaning. The s e c t i o n o f t h e o r i g i n a l r e p o r t a l s o r e c e n t e f f u s i o n o f the h ead q u arters s t a f f touches very l i g h t l y on housekeeping. The r e p o r t made some m e n tio n a b o u t h o u s e k e e p in g b e in g k e p t i n good c o n d itio n , and th e l a t e s t had a few rem arks abo u t vacuum clean in g in p lace o f brooms in foundry c lean in g rooms. I d o u b t v e ry much i f any foundrym en would go uo t h e e x p en se o f p u t t i n g i n any vacuum c le a n in g f o r foundry f l o o r s . I would suggest th a t the housekeeping p o rtio n in c lu d e a d e f in ite recom m e n d a tio n f o r o i l i n g f l o o r s i n fo u n d r y c l e a n i n g rooms a s we have found th a t the d u st in the clean in g rooms can be reduced m a t e r i a l l y by such o i l i n g . ITe u s e t h e r e g u l a r f u e l o i l which we h ave i n t h e p l a n t . F l o o r s a r e o i l e d e v e r y t h r e e o r f o u r months, and i t i s ' estim ated th a t one g a llo n of o il m i l c o v e r a b o u t 100 s q u a r e f e e t ( i t may l a k e more o i l on f i r s t a p p lic a tio n ) . This i s p u t on w ith an o rd in a ry hand w atering p o t and i s done o n d i r t f l o o r s , a s we h a v e h ad no o c c a s i o n to p u t i t on co n crete. In regard to th is o ilin g of foundry flo o rs , th is is done only in the Cleaning Department. I t i s not done in the molding a r e a where sand which i s u s e d i n m o ld in g m ig h t come i n c o n t a c t -with i t , a s i t would p ro v e d e t r i m e n t a l to good m o ld in g p r a c t i c e .
