Dorn stated that the General Manager of the Metropolitan Manila Water Works and Sewage System received correspondence from a Philippine assemblyman questioning the decision to specify A/C water pipe. The assemblyman's letter made claims to the effect that "reputable laboratories have confirmed a link between asbestos in drinking water and cancer" and "industrialized countries are discouraging the use of A/C pipe." Dorn sought usage statistics to counter the assemblyman's allegations which, he felt, were made at the prodding of ductile iron and PVC pipe manufacturers. In response, Staff provided estimates of A/C pipe usage in the United States and Europe. Further, it was recommended that Dorn send a copy of the American City and County Magazine's "water pipe survey" which showed increasing market share for .\/C pipe at the expense of ductile iron pipe.
