ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMERS WAYNE, New Jersey, June 5, 1990 -- The vinyl industry's efforts to improve worker safety and protect the environment have resulted in a record number of awards from the Vinyl Industry, the national trade association representing the leading manufacturers of vinyl (PVC, or polyvinly chloride), vinyl feedstocks, additives, and film and sheet products. Each year, the Institute recognizes those member companies that have made the most outstanding contributions to the safe production of PVC. This year's awards recognize performance during 1989. The Institute's environmental achievement award is designed to measure a plant's ability to control and minimize vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) emissions and is modeled on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Emission Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants. VCM is a feedstock used to manufacture PVC, the world's second largest selling plastic material. As defined by OSHA, a recordable incidence rate involves on-the-job injuries and illness resulting in medical treatment.
