March 30, 1961 Mr. I. Matelsky Industrial Hygienist General Electric Company Lamp Division Nela park Cleveland 12, Ohio Bear Mr. Matelskys I am sending herewith three (3) copies of the report of our experimental examination of the hygienic problem which you brought to us in connection with the coated lamps. , '' For two reasons I have not put this together in the usual form of the reports which we issue. One of these was that I wanted to have at hand any comments or suggestions concerning- it which might come from yourself or your people; the other relates to the use which you may wish to make of this report. y;ith respect to the latter point, there is the possibility that you may have need to show someone, at eome time, the evidence to back up any statement which you may be called upon to make concerning the potential hasard. I shall hope that you and your associates will not raise this issue yourselves, and that the action suggested above would be taken only under duress. I am sure you can understand that we do not wish our reports reproduced or distributed for sales-pro motional purposes, and in this instance this negative information would be useful only if objection were raised to the distribution of these lamps because of the potential hasard which v/e have investi gated. . : ' . If you consider that you will need formal reports for such a purpose as I have indicated, we can provide them in modest numbers. If, however, you merely wish to file this report, for use if an occasion of need should arise - which is what I would be likely to do, I think, if I were in your position - the three copies sent herewith may well be sufficient for your purposes. I shall be guided by your wishes in this matter, but I wish to point out to you that we regard our reports as our own, and we guard very carefully the manner of their use, for any other than scientific purposes. I am sure you will appreciate our position in this, for it would be disastrous to us and our sponsors if The Kettering Laboratory 0 0 0 3 9 S0 Mr. I. Matelsky -2- March 30, 1961 should come to be regarded as a proponent of industrial activities of a commercial type, or a testing laboratory. ' , Cordially yours, ' Robert A. Kehoe, II. D.
