Dear Doctor Walther:
I feel sure that you are aware of the facts of which I shall speak in relation to this case, but no harm will have been done in mentioning them.
With reference to the analytical results, first, I think it wise to point out that the absorption of tetraethyl lead does not elevate the lead content of the blood materially, but it does elevate the urinary lead concentration greatly and promptly. In this instance neither fluid is high in its lead content, and thu3 no exposure to lead, either organic or inorganic, has occurred.
There is only the slightest exposure to lead in connection with the' handling of leaded gasoline (it is, in fact, theoretical, rather than significant).
Lead absorption must be severe and prolonged in order to induce paralysis. I have never seen such a lesion otherwise.
The absorption of teti'aethyl lead has never been known to induce peripheral neuritis or paralysis of any other type.
I mention these matters only because they seem to be pertinent connections with a medical problem of this type, and certainly the matter must be looked into, as you have done.
Cordially yours.
