OSIIA Air Standard, effective July 1, 1976 (determined by air san^lins): " " a. 8-hour, time-weiphted average of 2 fibers, lonper than 5 nicror.eters in length, per cubic centimeter of air; b. Compliance with the above exposure limits is not achieved by the use of respirators only. However, respirators should be worn, when handling unwetted asbestos products, 6. These fibers should be vacuumed, not swept. In addition, asbestos waste, debris or scrap should not be allowed to litter work areas. Asbestos waste products should be collected and disposed of in sealed, impermeable baps, or other closed, impermeable containers properly labelled. Asbestos products, such as caskets, which are fabricated at the plant and may have frayed edpes, should also be stored in scaled impermeable baps clearly labelled, Pre-labelled baps (30" x 37", 4 nl thick) for disposal of asbestos scrap only are available from the Safety Office, Adhesive backed caution labels for other containers are available from the Rnvironmental Sciences Department, 7. Asbestos products should be used with restraint. Depart ment supervisors should investipate the possibility of usinp asbestos substitutes, such as Refrasil and Kaowool, Where only 'asbestos"will perform a job adequately, the . appropriate department supervisor should authorize its use for that job only, 8. Periodic air sanplinp will be conducted to determine whether any employee is elipible for an annual comprehensive medical examination.
