We returned here Tuesday night. The convention, highpoint of the past week, enabled us to do considerable con tact -work. Among those we sawv and talked to in Cleveland were: Dr. Pulton and Mr. Dooley of the Pennsylvania State Department of Health; Dr. Cranch of Union Carbide who agreed to serve on our Membership Committee; Dr. McCord of Deroit; Dr. Reiser of the National Association of Manufacturers; Dr. Shoudy of Bethlehem Steel; Dr. Mclver Woody, Standard Oil Company, president-elect of the Physicians and Surgeons; Mr. Cummings, The Saranac Laboratory; Dr. Sappington, Chicago; Mr. Carruthers, Editor of SAFETY ZlC-INEERING; Dr. McAnally, Peoples Natural Gas, Pittsburgh, a Standard Oil affiliate; Dr. Sayers, U. S. Public Health Service; Dr. Zimmerman, Westinghouse Air Brake; Mr. Cloud, Editor, INDUSTRIAL MEDICINE; Professor Drinker, and a number of others including Dr. Holden of Pittsburgh Plate Glass, Mr. Barnes of Westinghouse Electric, Dr. Meiter, Employers Mutual Liability Insurance, etc. Some of the above men made gratifying comments regarding the Founda tion. Dr. Zimmerman stated that two vice presidents of his company (Ydstinghouse Air Brake) read all of our publications. Prof. Drinker said "Mr. Bvrk is doing a good job on the abstracts", and Dr. McCord who was very cordial staged, nwe depend upon your publications." We were especially glad to establish contact with Dr. Woody of Standard Oil. Before leaving for Cleveland, Mrs. Diamond and I completed the new "prospect list" which we have been wo:ricing up and which was described in lest week's report. This involved an analysis of all correspondence with con.'pai.de.; not affiliated with the Foundation. A preferred list was developed, numbering about 175 firms. Some additions which are to be made will bring this to abort 200. The list is for the use of the Membership Committee. It will b: of value to us in inviting non-member companies to our November meeting. Dr. Meller and I saw Dr. Hamor on Thursday for a discussion c` in Cleveland convention and other matters pertinent to the Foundation, if > n.i; membership work were outlined. These include the approaching of a ::nm>cr.v of representative firms which have been continually requesting Founda;. ion pu.sl.: cations but which have evaded action on membership. (I spent the latter part of the week 'working on this list.) '.Seek ended June 10, 1959 The May issue of the Public Relations INDEX by the McGraw-Hill Publishing Company contains an excellent comment on the Foundation. This comment was based on the Institute's annual report. ',.e discussed this ?;hole matter with Mr. Rising of BUSINESS 5Z2C, v:ho edits the INDEX, on our recent New York trip, he have v.ritten for extra copies to distribute. The material can be used to advantage in a number of sectors. Mr. Ahearn of the Board of Trustees wrote commently favorably on our report of the New York trip which Dr. Mellar sent to asabers of the-Board. He suggested that we plan a forum on public relations for the November meeting, as has been discussed. The Institute of Boiler & Radiator manufacturers, replying to our recent letter urging more support from the industry, advised that our request would be taken up at a meeting .of the Executive Committee of the Institute during the week of June 18. The new bulletin reporting the X-ray research at University of Penn sylvania was received from the printer during the week. We planned the distribu tion of copies of this report to certain medical, professional and trade publica tions, together with an explanatory letter. HAZARDS AND SAFETY (June) carries a brief summary of our release on the last engineering bulletin. In the same issue, Warren Cook of the Preventive Engineering Committee, calls attention to the Foundation in a special article. Newspaper clippings continued to come in from papers all over the country with a story based on our news release covering the last engineering bulletin (No. 8).
