It ia very disturbing to ie to aee this tyjpe of information being published now by organized labor when it should have been done a long time ago by friction material manufacturers. In my opinion we could have and should have recommended a better procedure than the one described in the attached union bulletin. 1 think they are "off base1' in recommending an ordinary "Shop Vac" for vacuum cleaning purposes. An EPA approved dust collection system or a portable vacuum cleaner with high efficiency filtra tion system would offer far better protection than most commercially available ehop vacuum cleaners. With proper hooding and exhaust facilities it should not be necessary to wear respiratory protection when performing arc grinding, although even with a good dust exhaust system, the extra protection of a respirator probably Is good insurance. The paragraph on dust disposal should recomaend a plastic or other duet-tight bag, and details for meeting OSHA and EPA waste disposal regulations should be provided. Sincerely, grb att.
