Tho acute toxicity of N2803-4 to the fathoad d n m , Pirrpho1e.a promelas, is described in thim final report. Tho tout was conducted for 38 Company for 96 hour8 fro@ September 25 to 29, 1995, at T.R. nilbury Laboratorios, Inc. in Xarblehoad, Xaasachusetts. I:t vae conducted by Peter L. KWAlski, Jeanne mgazu, JaCqUe1ine Nevium, )<evenStevens, Peter NOViUn, Robert Boeri, and Timothy Ward according to t h ~ aprotocol developed for T.R. wilbury study Number 894-Tfl. N2803-4 VILB supplied by tho rponsor.
The teat was performed under static conditions with five concentrations of test substance and a dilution water control at A temperature of 21.6 to 22.7.C. The dilution water wail filtered deionized water collected at Harblehead, Hassachueotts and adjusted to A hardnoss of 44 mg/L as caco,. Aeration was not required to maintain dismolved oxygen concentration. above an acceptable level.
Nominal concentration8 of N2803-4 were 0 (control), 160, 250. 400, 630, And 1,000 mg/L. Fathead minnws usod in the teat were procured from A commercial supplier and acclimAted to test condition. at T.R. Wilbur: Laboratories. After 96 hour. of exposurfrthe control fish had an average wet weight (blotted dry) of 0.19 g and an average total. length of 28.6 nun. All fish were in good condition at the beginning of the study.
Exposure of fathead minnows to the test substance resulted in a 96 hour median lethal concentration (LC50) of 7 4 0 mg/L N2803-4, with a 959 confidence interval of 660 to 830 mg/L. The 96 hour no observed effect concentration (NOEC) is 400 mg/L.

This study was rponsorod by 3M Company, 5t Paul, KLnnosota. Tho objoctivo of the study WAS to dotormino tho 24, 48, 72, and 96 hour Dsdian lethal concontrations (LCSOs) of tho test substanscr to tho fathoad minnow, P h p h e l o 8 prumoles, A froshwator fish, under static conditions. The tost protocol WAS based on U . 8 . EPA mekhods (U.S. EPA, 1993). Tho roport contains sections that describe the Iruthods and materials employod in tho study, and results of the investigation. The rtsport also contains an appondix that prononts water quality data collectod during the test.

Tho sample of N2803-4 (T.R. Wilbury Laboratories Sample Number 544) waa delivered to T.R. wilbury Labor.rtories on September 22, 1995 in a 250 ml glass bottle within a cardboard box at ambient temperature. The attached label included the following information% '"2803-4, Corrosive, 8.5. flartin, 53-4N-02778-5774. 9/13/95-.
N2803-4 (a white powder) WAS supplied by 3fl Company, St Paul,
Minnesota. Prior to use the test substance was stored in the dark at room
temperature. Test substance stock solutions were formulated in dilution
Water without the use of a solvent. The test sutistance was assumed to

Water used for acclimation of test organisms and for all toxicity testing was deionized water collected at T.R. Wilbury Laboratories in W b l e b e a d , mssachuaetts. Water was adjusted to a .hardnessof 40-48 mg/L as CaCO, and otored in 500-gallon polyethylene tank13where it was aerated and continuously passed through a particle filter, u:Ltraviolet sterilizer, and activated carbon. Results of chemical analysis of a representative sample of water are presented in Tabla 1.

During acclimation fish were not treated for dimoamel, thoy were free of
apparent micknorm, injuriem, and abnonmlitiom At tho boginning of tho

3a.
During the 14 day period before the start of the test the acclimation temperature rango warn 21.0 to 21.9.C 8nd the dismolved oxygen concentration warn alwaym at least 7.7 mg/L. During ac:climation fish were
fed a dry commercial food (Tetra win. staple Food, Lot # TH05) daily
except during the 48 hours immed!ately procoding the temt. Pimh woro not
fod during the test. At the conclurion of the test the control fish had an average total length of 28.6 m and an average wijt weight of 0.19 q (loading rate during the definitive toxicity temt wa# 0.13 g/L).
TOXICITX TCSTIUG:
The definitive toxicity test was pctrformed from September 25 to 29, 1995, according to T.R. wilbury Protocol 894-TH (Acute Toxicity of N2803-4 To The Fathead Minnow, Pfmephalea promelas). The protocol, which waq migned by the study director on August 16, 1995, is based on procedures of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (1993). A slumnary of the test Byrtem i m presented in Table 2.
The test was conducted at a target temperature of 22 f 2.C with five concentrations of test substance and a cLtlution water' control. Nominal concentrations of the test substance we:ce: 0 mg/L (control), 160, 250, 400, 630, and 1,009 mg/L. Appropriate amounts of test substance were added directly to dilution water in test vessels to formulate test media without the use of a solvent.
Twenty fathead minnows were indiscriminately and oqually distributed among two replicates of each treatment. The test was performed in 20 liter glass aquaria that contained 15 liters of test solution (water depth was approximately 1 E cm). Test vessels were randomly arranged in a water bath during the 96 hour test (a rcindom numbers table was used to select the location of each vessel) and they were loosely covered. A 16 hour light and 8 hour dark photoperiod with a 15 minute transition period Was automatically maintained with cool-white fluoreacent lights that provided a light intensity of 30 footcandles.
