March 25, 1981 Mr. Julian Frey Ethyl Corporation 100 Park Avenue New York 17, New York Dear Mr. Frey: A rumor has come indirectly to my ears, apparently from a medical colleague in Japan, to the effect that a Japanese physician, return ing home from the United States, has reported that cases of lead poisoning have occurred on the West Coast of the United States in consequence of the Introduction of tetramethyllead into use into gasoline. Considering the history of such absurd rumors in the past, I can understand how this one came into existence. Following the introduction of tetramethyllead into use, this laboratory has been investigating the possibility that there might be some increase in the exposure to lead of persons mho handle gasoline containing this compound. X may say, at this point, that the results of this investigation over a period of nine months have demonstrated clearly that no such hazard exists. Nevertheless, the matter has been under investigation, and this fact, which has come to be known by illinformed, as well as knowledgeable persons, has been magnified into a serious problem. In addition the matter of lead in the air of certain American cities, including those on the West Coast, has been under investigation and has been talked about both realistically and unrealistically in various places and at various times. Xt la not surprising, therefore, that a matter for investigation has been converted into a matter for concern. We have encountered both unwarranted apprehension and irresponsible talk in this area of our activities previously and no doubt we shall again. Let me assure you that there have been no clinical problems of any kind in relation to the distribution and use of tetramethyllead on the West Coast or elsewhere since the introduction of the use of this agent in gasoline. Gasoline containing tetramethyllead has been in use on the West Coast since May of 1980, as you know, and such gasoline is being distributed elsewhere in this country. There have been no cases of Illness and no claims or complaints of illness in this relationship.
