Ciskowskl R. Therrlen You will have received a copy of the Minutes of the meeting and read the contents, pertaining to labels.and languages, and noted the diversity of opinion. There was in short little agreement at this meeting on this sub ject, and from what I learnt later, at the Directors meeting, on this one point. We had at the previous meeting attempted to have the O.S.H.A. type Caution'-1' : Label suggestion forwarded by you, considered, with little success. There were too many choices offered, and the Chairman had decided that we should finalize what might lead to one agreed - to opinion, before he forwarded any recommendations to the Directors. At the latest Meeting, it appeared that each Mine would end by having its own version of label and wording. J.-Manville's ; idea of using the exist"iiig' English wording but translating it into several languages, has been made because the wording and size has been in use for years, is known and associated with its Canadian origin as a product of Canada. They have con tinued this image and extended it by translation into several languages. This may lead to bags eventually appearing somewhat similar to a page from a foreign dictionary - but - the warning is the same, and apparently offers J.M.'s Legal Department no qualms We at Careys feel that our export volume of 40% to the U.S.A. and 60% to other countries, follows a similar pattern to J.M.*s and, whilst we would prefer using no words, or an absolute minimum, to get the "Cautidto" point across, as an alternative, we would prefer to continue using, as J.M.*s have, .the same. Since by law in Canada, we must use English and French to safeguard our workers, the addition of translations into other languages of this same warning will offer no 6erlous problem. I believe this to be the best compromise that can be arrived at as a solution to this vexed question. It may seem like following in J.M. 's steps, but, as the Minutes, and the above earlier paras, show, there can be no end to disagreements, and, we prefer to be in step with, if any one company, one that is world recognized in this field of business.
