Criss Dear Mr. Shearer: I was asked to examine James Criss for possible recall for temporary work. Mr. Criss has a history of epileptic seizures going back to 1974. He has been under the care of a neurologist since that time and is currently taking dilantin and phenobarbital. The patient is not sure what type of epilepsy he has but he has fallen during sei zures in the past and sustained lacerations and contusions. Mr. Criss states that he had his last seizure about 6 months ago. There is no set pattern to the seizures and no premonitory symptoms. His neurologist has approved his return to work with many restrictions. Physical examination on May 28, 1982 was essentially normal. This man's work capabilities are limited in view of the risk of his having a seizure. He should not do any work on heights; he should not work around moving machinery or hazardous chemicals; and he should not operate a motor vehicle. It would be preferable.that he be work ing with others. He is always at risk of having a seizure and perhaps injuring himself. It is true that he has not had a seizure for 6 months but that does not preclude him from having a seizure at any time. This is a typical problem involving patients with epilepsy. Physically they are able to perform the tasks at hand but they are always at risk of having a seizure which could be injurious to themselves or possibly to others.
