MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT ASBESTOS REMOVAL GUIDELINE I. PURPOSE This Guide describes practices to be used when removing asbestos-containing material. 11 policy .^ L To safeguard employees from exposure to asbestos materials which may be hazardous to their health. III. GUIDE When insulation removal is required, the maintenance foreman will do the following: A. Determine if the insulation contains friable asbestos material. If unable to determine, take a sample to hygiene lab. Sample must be properly tagged identifying equipment to be stripped, __ If work must proceed then wear personal protective equipment and treat as if insulation is asbestos until results of sample is given. __ B. If the insulation contains friable asbestos material the Maintenance Foreman must: . 1. Communicate to employees doing the work the hazards and procedures for personal protection, housekeeping and disposal of waste when working with asbestoscontaining material. 2. Fill out and post in the area the asbestos insulation removal permit form Q-1002. If barricades are necessary make sure barricades are sufficient to pro tect other personnel. 6113 19197 MON-305 c 2- - C 3. When job is completed the Maintenance Foreman must complete removal permit form Q-1002 and send to Insulator Foreman. C. If insulation contains friable asbestos material, when stripping the Maintenance personnel must: 1. Post asbestos warning signs around the area where asbestos-containing materials are being stripped. Barricade where necessary to protect other personnel. 2. Wear approved respirator or mask (mask available at Insulator Shop). Respirator A.O.-R5000 R30 filter mask 3M non-toxic partical mask #8710. 3. Wet down material to be stripped if temperature is above 32F or 0C. Material must be kept wet while handling. Iflpipes can be taken down in sections and insulation is contained in a covering, it does not need to be wet down but protective equipment ' must be worn. After removal of section, pipe should be taken to Insulator Shop for stripping. t 4. Asbestos material that has been stripped overhead shall be transported to the ground in impermeable (plastic) sealed bags; do not drop to the ground. 5. Collect all asbestos-containing material in impermeable (plastic); bags. Seal the bags and place in load lugger located at CAC Spill Control Basin. Material must be kept wet during stripping and handling if temperature is above 32F or 0C. 6113 19198 c -3- c 6. Clean up area by use of a vacuum or wet area and sweep, never dry sweep asbestos-containing material. 7. Notify the Environmental Group for disposal of asbestos. 8. Upon completion of stripping and before taking a shower, remove clothing, place in a plastic bag. Close the bag with a warning tag and place bag in container marked for asbestos contaminated clothing. 9. A shower must be taken upon completion of stripping.
