Hi Senator, The Shawnee & Chickasaw Reps met with me last week. To the best of my knowledge, they did not meet with the Secretary.
My door is open to you and the folks who oppose the casino, as well, if you & they are so inclined.
I have already briefed the Secretary regarding the views and interests expressed by both those who support and those who oppose this application.
I anticipate a decision will be made in the near future.

Mr. Secretary,
I understand that tribal leaders may be meeting with you today regarding the Guymon, Oklahoma casino matter.
If, in fact, this is the case, I believe it is only fair that you would also meet with those who oppose the casino.
I know Jim Cason is diligently working on this case, and I certainly appreciate his careful examination of the issues at hand. I think it might be helpful to have the opportunity to discuss the matter in person prior to a final decision being made.
Please let me know if this is a possibility. Thank you for your consideration and have a nice weekend.
BOB DOLE

Hi Senator, Thanks for your letter. The status of the Shawnee application is unchanged. I have tasked the Office of Indian Gaming (OIG) with conducting additional analysis to clarify inconsistencies between the views expressed by the opposing parties involved. I am expecting a response from OIG next week.
Contrary to the quote in your letter, DOI has not made a decision on this matter. I often use the Shawnee case as both an illustration of the additional consideration DOI gives to landless Tribes and the conflicts involved in addressing applications seeking to place land into trust a long distance from where tribal members live.
With the recent addition of our new Deputy Secretary, it has become less clear about who would sign a decision document. I have briefed the Secretary on this matter several times. I will bring David Bernhardt, our new Deputy Secretary, up to speed shortly.
Once I have the results of the OIG analysis. I plan to share the information with both the Secretary & Deputy Secretary to obtain their direction for deciding this matter. At this point, I am anticipating a decision sometime later this month.
I hope all is well with you now. (b) (6)

In addition to the matter we have already discussed, I am working on another project that has completely different facts. I believe it may be under your review. The attached letter explains a bit more about the case.
If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at (202) 654-4848. Thanks, Jim, and I hope you enjoy your weekend.
