THE QUESTION
OF
UNDERWRITERS1 APPROVED
APPLIANCE AND LEAD WIRES
Underwriters' Laboratories are primarily concerned with the fire and accident features of equipment, materials, devices and appliances. Their approvals and listings are given after exhaustive tests have been run by them on completed appliances or assemblies, judged solely on their safe performance as a unit.
Underwriters' have not at the present time established standards for asbestos insulated wires to be used as internal wiring of appliances and devices. While they have made provisions to accept and test for approval some special insulated electrical conductors for specific appliance applica tions (for example the wires listed on pages 14, 15, and 1<S in this Catalog) their approval of asbestos insulated lead wire is based on its applica tion to a completed appliance or assembly which they will approve as a unit. Rockbestos has for more than thirty-five years manufactured asbestos insulated lead and appliance wires for all types of electrical appliances and devices. Underwriters' Laboratories through the years have approved many manufacturers' electrical appliances wired with the Rockbestos stand ard constructions listed in this catalog.
Since the Underwriters' Laboratories Approval of an appliance is granted on the complete appliance and not on the component parts indi vidually, it must be clearly understood that because there are no Under writers' Standards for these types of wires, they cannot be Underwriters' Labeled. The recommendations for appliance wires that we make in this catalog are based on our long time experience that these constructions properly applied will successfully meet the requirements of the Under writers' Laboratories. These wires may also be used to conform to the standards for wiring required by the A.G.A. for gas range electrical cir cuits.
Our Research and Design Engineers keep constantly abreast with special product applications as well as the many new unusually high temp erature insulation materials which can be of help to you. We offer you our research facilities for the development of special wires designed to meet any unusual requirements you may have.

RANGE AND APPLIANCE LEAD WIRES
Important Information -- Read Before Specifying
Before reviewing the Standard Specifications for Rockbestos Electric or Gas Ranee and Ap pliance Lead Wires a working knowledge of the types of impregnation used in the felted asbes tos and/or braid is essential. There are two basic types -- "Hi-Temp" which is heat and flame resisting, and "Moistemp" which is heat, flame, and moisture resisting. You should also knowsomething of the type of application in w-hich they should be used.
"Hi-Temp" Impregnation -- Scope and Limits
"Hi-Temp" impregnation is designed for applications in which the temperature is usual ly high and there is little or no moisture. A waffle iron suggests itself as a typical example as temperatures in them frequently range around 600F. Under such heat, and also because of high wattage and close confinement, moisture accumulated during the "off" period is dissipated before a leakage path or a short can develop. This condition is duplicated in many electrical products, but care must be exercised in determining whether the temperature rise is sufficiently rapid to dry out the insulation, as a slowly rising temperature will permit leakage to build up to a point where a short may occur.
"Moistemp" Impregnation -- Scope and Limits
"Moistemp" impregnation is designed for applications in which the temperature is high but not extreme, and where humidity and moisture may cause current leakage. This is par ticularly true of some appliances and devices in which the insulation on the ends of the wires attached to heating units is exposed to high temperatures, while the insulation on the wires between the terminals may be in a moist, low temperature area. In such applications "Mois temp" impregnation should be specified as it is not only heat and flame resistant but moisture resisting as well.
High-Dielectric and Asbestos Insulation
This type of insulation, employed in the .033" and .043" Hi-Dielectric Range and Ap pliance Lead wires shown on pages 12 and 13, is designed to meet conditions similar to those detailed in the paragraph above but more exaggerated, as in heavy duty appliances such as electric ranges, gas ranges and water heaters. The combination of tape and felted asbestos provides high resistance to both heat and moisture, and the asbestos may be impregnated with either "Hi-Temp" or "Moistemp" compound as required.

HOW and WHERE TO SPECIFY EITHER "MOISTEMP' or "HI-TEMP" INSULATIONS
These NEMA Type Appliance wires are furnished in two basic
types of impregnations'''MOISTEMP" impregnation in the felted wall is designed for applications where the temperature is high but not extreme, and where humidity and moisture may cause current leakage. For example, in some appliances and devices the insulation at the ends of the wires attached to heating units is exposed to high temperatures while the rest of the wire run may be m a moist, lower temperature area. For these applications specify "Moistemp" impregnation as it is not only heat and dame resistant but moisture resisting as well.
"HI-TEMP'' Impregnation in the felted wall is heat and dame resisting and designed for applications where the tem
perature is usually high with little or no moisture Under heat, and because of high wattage and dose confinement, moisture accumulated during the "off" period is dissipated before a
leakage path oi short can develop. This condition exists in many products, but care must be exercised in determining whether the temperature rise is sufficiently rapid to dry out the insulation, as a slowly rising temperature will permit leakage to build up to a point where a short may occur.

HOW and WHERE TO SPECIFY EITHER "HI-TEMP" or "MOISTEMP" INSULATIONS
These Underwriters' approved stove wires are furnished in
two basic types of impregnations: "HI-TEMP" Impregnation in both the felted will and braid is heat and flame resisting and designed for applications where the temperature is usually high with little or no
moisture. Under heat, and because of high wattage and close confinement, moisture accumulated during the "off" period is dissipated before a leakage path or short can develop. This condition exists in many products, but care must be exercised
in determining whether the temperature rise is sufficiently rapid to dry out the insulation, as a slowly rising tempera
ture will permit leakage to build up to a point where a
short may occur. "MOISTEMP" impregnation in both the felted wall and
braid is designed for applications where the temperature is high but not extreme, and where humidity and moisture
may cause current leakage. For example, in some appliances and devices the insulation at the ends of the wires attached
to heating units is exposed to high temperatures while the rest of the wire run may be in a moist, lower temperature
area. For these applications specify "Moistemp" impregna tion as it is not only heat and flame resistant but moisture resisting as well.
CURRENT-CARRYING CAPACITIES are listed on page 7 foe these wires along with Current Correction Factors for various ambient temperatures.
SPECIAL CONDUCTORS such as CopperweM or alloys other than nickel or monel or extra flexible conductors can be supplied oft special order.
NOTE: Tables A and R are rated 300 volts in this catalog since stove wire is limited to a 300-volt rating, however these tables are shown in our 10-G catalog with a 600-volt rating for industrial usage.

This ideal high temperature insulation of high dielectric tapes combined with felted asbestos impregnated with "HiTemp." heat and flame resistant compound and covered overall with a silicone coated glass yarn braid. Standard conductors for these Asbestos and Glass insulated appliance lead wires are solid and stranded nickel (or a maximum operating temperature of 200!C. These appliance lead wires are used tor high temperature
applications where the temperature at terminal connections is too high to allow the use of copper conductors. They were originally designed as leads in electric range deep well cooker units where high temperatures in confined areas along with the flexing action of raising and lowering the unit called for a wire to withstand the heat and remain permanently flexible. Standard color: Natural (Tan) only.
