Shanghai Health Study - Sustainable Development Opportunity
Mark,
This note is to follow up with the voice mail that I left you on Monday, September 27.
Shell is one of 5 sponsors of a large benzene health study in Shanghai. I have attached the latest issue paper which will give you some background information. One of the expectations of the project was that the diagnostic laboratory that was built, equipped, and technicians trained would remain open to serve Shanghai after the study is done. The sponsors need to ensure that this expectation is met. I would like to explore with you - or whomever you designate - options for pursuing this goal.
Regards, Patsy

Shell is contributing to a joint study in Shanghai that aims to better define the hazards and heaith risks from exposure to benzene as part of ongoing product stewardship and safety and health programs A state-of-theart dinical and molecular laboratory has been buiit on the Fudan IVledical University campus to support the research project and the Shanghai medicai community and wiil remain at Fudan once the project is completed. The .1oint Sino-US Clinical and r<lolecular Laboratory (.JCfVJL) is a coliaborative effort established between the University of Colorado Heaith Sciences Center and Fudan University. JC~/1L conducts research on occupational exposure to benzene, and studies the causes and effects between the infections of virus/drugs and blood/lymph system diseases.
The directors of the laboratory are Prof. Richard Irons, head of ~/lolecular Toxicology & Environmental Health Sciences Research Program in the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, and Prof. Fu Hua from School of Public Health, Fudan University. JCp/1L staffs include A.merican and Chinese specialists in hematology, pathology, and moiecular biology. A few of the staffs of JO~L have PhD and master's degrees, and some staffs have been trained abroad.
JG'lL consists of sample iog-in room, ceil culture room, FISH room, molecular biology room, cytogenetics room, flow cytometry room, CSC and other routine examination room, as well as external contact and document handling office. The lab has sophisticated laboratory equipment including automatic chmmosome analysis and photo taken systems, automatic biology and chemistry analYSiS device (Roche), automatic blood corpuscle analYSiS device (CD3700), immune analysis device (IIVJx), five-color flow C')rtometry device (FC500), PCR device, tissue cutting device, temperature/humidity controlling device, 1'10dulyoD device, Cyrol'1ed controlled Rate Freezers, Cryoplus Liquid r~itrogen Storage System, and fluorescence microscope, etc.
The project is sponsored by the international Benzene Health Research Consortium. The Consortium consists of British Petroleum, ChevmnTexaco, ConocoPhillips, Exxoni'10bil and Shell Chemical Company. During the study, the Consortium wiil invest about 10 million US dollars.
JG'lL is an important part of the Sino-US pmject of benzene poisoning study. The project indudes three tasks:
Case and control study on acute myelogenous leukemia (A.ML) and nonHodgkin's lymphoma (fIJHL); Study on aplastic anemia (ft.A), myelodysplastic syndrome UJiDS), acute myelogenous leukemia (AJ'1L), and benzene poisoning disease progression; Study on molecular epidemiC diseases on benzene exposed workers.
The collaboration has been established between .JCfVJL and more than 20 hospitals in Shanghai (mainly third ievel hospitals). The first class clinical laboratory examinations on biood, bone marrow, and lymphoma will be pmvided for the patients fmm the coilaborative hospitals. The examinations include:
fVJorphology Tissue immunology Flow cytometry Chmmosomes FISH and recombination of the genes P~olecular bioiogy
esc, and diagnoses of leukemia and lymphoma according to WHO's standard
classifications.
JUJiL is aiso responsible for other tasks of the study, including analyzing ES, HI\}, C-liver and HHV virus fmm patients' blood sampies; analyzing biood and chromosomes of the blood and bone marrow samples from the workers who exposed to benzene; studying on the genes which are susceptible to benzene; establishing lymph cell systems and culturing the bone marrow ceils.
The study has been approved by reiated departments of Central and Shanghai governments, and by the ethical institutes of both China and USA. The study is also strongly supported by each big hospital in Shanghai, by SCDC and IPHS. The estabiishment of JU'lL wiil certainiy make important contributions to Shanghai medicai institutes, to the diagnoses, treatment and research of leukemia and iymphoma, and to the enhancement of occupational and labor protection.
