On May 6 Dr. Dunbar in an ad d r ess before th e Nation al A gr icu lt u r al Chemical A ssociat ion made th e follow in g statem en t: 'Se t t in g o f safe t o le r an ce s i s a d i ff i c u l t qu estion due to many d iver se fa c t o r s. For example, no accu r at e methods were av ailab le fo r est im at in g r e sid u al spray l e f t on or absorbed by th e food products,' in form ation was lack in g as t o whether r e sid u e s remained in t a c t or whether weathering reduced or in t e n sifie d the t o xic e ffe c t and whether th ey could be removed by washing or ar e ab sorbed and th us n ot removable. In view of th e above we would lik e t o see a h earin g delayed u n t il a l l in forma t io n p o ssib le e ffe c t in g th e determ inin g o f t o le r an ce s of DDT and Parath ion h as been secu red. N at u r ally , we d e sir e a t oler an ce t h at i s as l ib e r a l as pu b lic h ealth w ill ju st i fy as we do not know how much our sprayin g programs might be changed. Also, i f new in se c t ic id e s r ep lace DDT and P arath ion , a s was th e case with Flu or in e, a h earin g in th e n ear fu t u r e would be expen sive and u n n ecessary. There h as been some i l l n e sse s t o qu ite a number of th ose pr epar in g and applyin g t h i s spr ay. A ll, however, have recovered without any apparen t la st in g e ffe c t .
