54 00 Page 26 D Scries SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES August 1979 54 00 Service Rear Suspension Lubricate the shackle pins using the specified grease through the two grease nippies on each rear spring. On four spring tandem vehicles, lubricate the shackle pins using the specified grease through the six grease nipples (see illustration). No lubrication is required on twin spring tandem vehicles. ABCD Grease compensating tube pins^uspension arm brackets (four spring bogie only). lubricate the compensating tube pins using the specified grease through the grease nipple located on each compensating tube pin. BCD Check battery terminals: clean and grease. Clean the connecting faces of the battery terminal posts and clamps to a bright surface with abrasive paper. Apply a thin film of petroleum jelly (not grease) to the terminal connections. ABCD Grease cab hinges and locking mechanism. The two cab hinges are located behind the front grille access panel and lubricated through the grease nipple on each hinge using the specified grease. Smear the cab locking mechanism, located at the rear of the cab with the specified grease. ABCD Lubricate door locks, cylinders and catches, hinges and check straps. Ensure all the door lock and hinge components, are lubricated with the specified oil and/or grease. Service CD Check brake linings for wear and ---------contamination._____________________ _ WARNING: Brake lining dust is injurious to health if inhaled and adequate safety precautions must be observed when cleaning the _____ brake drums and/or backpiatee. Chock the wheels, jack up the vehicle and fit the axle stands. Slacken off the brake adjusters and remove the wheel and brake drum assembly as detailed in Operation 14 371. Examine the brake linings for evidence of contamination by oil, grease or other harmful substances. Check the linings for excessive wear, if the lining thickness is considered inadequate for the next service period, it must be reported and the service form endorsed. NOTE: Following completion of all Maintenance Procedures that necessitate removal of the wheel and brake drum assembly, the assembly must be refitted and ALL the brakes adjusted as detailed in Operation 12 132.
