Southwick ST4203P2 - To find an easy-brushing house paint primer equal to or better than Y-1851 in durability and blister resistance* 1W124A and EGL62006 are excellent primers superior to Y-1851 in brushing and blister resistance. Field test reports rate these primers highly for application. Exposure tests will have to be completed before this product can be recommended for Endurance and Spred House Paint. We plan to continue testing and evaluating this material with the goal of replacing Y-I85I. EGL-62006 is a lead-free primer using V-523 and V-855 as its vehicle. 1W124A is identical to EGL-62006 except for color and driers. 1W124A contains lead driers and is tinted gray. M-500 (thixatrol ST) is used as the bodying and brushing aid. These primers are made exclusively on the Cowles because of the heat required to react M-500. Grinds were first made on the 1W124A formula in June and July of this year. After five months the viscosity is very stable. The freedom from settling on the travelometer is excellent. The brushing is excellent; it is definitely the best brushing primer ever made in this lab. 1W121A was produced for Alvin Homes and has met with great success. Central Region is planning to sell this primer under a special label due to its excellent acceptance by painter.. Blister box tests show both primers to be better than Y-1851 for blister resistance. EGL-62006 is a trace better than 1W124A. Blister tests were prepared as follows: 1st day - prime coat; 3rd day - top coat, 7th day - blister test started. Results are listed on following page. We do feel that this is an excellent formula and should be very good for exterior exposlire. Any limited production of this material would be welcomed by this laboratory.
