At the end of the month the plant had worked 300 days since the last disabling injury. PVC resin production was controlled at 20.7 MM pounds in April to reflect changes in sales brought on by the general economic slump. Downtime was taken in both reactor areas to perform mechanical repairs, revisions for new projects and inspection of reactors. Test runs were conducted to evaluate J-40 methocel and to dry a small quantity of pond resin for customer evaluation. There were three reportable VCM releases in April, all representing small quantities. One occurred when a double rupture disc on D-500 reactor developed a leak at normal operating conditions. Improved rupture disc holders have been installed to minimize future events of this nature. The other two occurred at the old reactor area blowdown drum as a result of mechanical failure and a process upset; This drum will be replaced with a higher pressure rated vessel to prevent future occurrences. Vinyl efficiency continued to be better than budget at 1.0091 pounds of VCM per pound of product versus a 1.0196 standard. Year to date is 1.0143. Compound production was 4.2 MM pounds with both lines I and III operating on a 7 day basis. A few additional tests were made on Line V but final modifications to the Werner Pfleiderer compounder will not be determined until May and June testing is completed in New Jersey and Germany. Dry Blend production was limited to 1.76 MM pounds for inventory control purposes. Plasticizer production was 1.12 MM pounds. A new daily production record of 133,548 pounds was set on April 2, 1980. The laboratory successfully started up an automated viscometer during the month greatly reducing analytical time required for resin viscosity testing and increasing testing capability from 6 samples per day to 30 per day.
