The first edition ! thb code n completed in the fell of 1920 end ieeued early la 1921. Il wtt prepared with the cooperation of an advisory committee of 19 men who had been eelacted becauK of their lateral in and knowledge of the aobject and aa being typical repreeentatirea of the intereaU moat doecly concerned. The code waa developed from a eet of eafety atandarde originally prepared in cooperation between the War and Navy Department! and the National Burean of Standards The aecond edition waa betted in 1922, after tcvbion by a eectiona! committee organised under the procedure! of the American Standards Association, and waa published aa National Bureau of Standards Handbook H2. The acope of the 22 project waa enlarged to include respiratory protection because of the many processes where simultaneous protection of hugs and eye* waa needed, and a revision was pub lished in 1938 as National Bureau of Standard* Handbook H24. In 1948 the sectional committee was reconvened and started work on a revision. A subcom mittee on eye protection was organised seder the direct supervision of the Netionel Bureau of Stand ards; a subcommittee on respiratory protection was organised under the supervision of the US Bureau of Mines; and a subcomittee on head protection waa organised under supervision of the Department of the Navy. All pans of the standard hid to be reviewed end brought up to date in order to include new materials and devices which bed keen developed since 1938, particularly the use of plastics for eye protection. Suggestions for improvement gained in the urn of this eundtrd will be welcomed. They should be sent to the American Standards Association, Incorporated, 70 East Forty-fifth Street, New York 17. N. Y.
