Bloomfield National Institute of Health Bethesda 14, Maryland Dear Jack: TJour first letter of July 13, and your second letter of July 31 asking for my vote on the question of whether or not we meet with the Industrial Physicians and Surgeons in 1945, has been received. I have hesitated this long time because in my own mind no clear-cut decision was possible on any reasonable basis,. It should be pointed out that in the first years of this organization I, probably more than anyone else, felt the difficulties of our joint meetings and many times wished that our Association would decide to meet alone or with some other group. However, there were obvious advantages in our Joint meetings and many of the responsible members of the Physician's group made consider able efforts to make these joint meetings a success and were extremely reasonable in their demands. *hile perhaps not all of our dealings were entirely harmonious, in general the relationship seemed to get better as time went on. It is probable that I am not cognizant of all that may have transpired in the last year or two, and particularly the last year as I was unable, due to sickness, to be at the St-. Louis meeting. One of the chief stumbling blocks appears to be the program time and how it is used and this has always been a little difficult. Unless there are other serious objections, I would like to suggest that we do not divorce our meetings altogether with the Industrial Physicians and Surgeons for the simple reason that it meets one of the objects of our Association; namely, the education and development of the medical profession as well as the general public in the various phases of industrial hygiene which may or may not be medical in scope. You all know that it has always been the desire of such people as Dr. Sayers and William Yant that our group disseminate ais much information as possible. These names are only repre sentative of the best thought in promoting industrial hygiene. It is suggested that a suitable compromise might be the holding of our convention in the same city and the same hotel as the Mr. J. J. Bloomfield - 2. August 9, 1944 Industrial Physician's group but with split weeks. One way that this could work out would be the holding of our convention on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and: Sunday in which the Sunday would be a transition day and the Industrial Physicians and Surgeons could then hold their meeting on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and as many other days as they desired or, if they wish to have the latter part of the week they could take any part of the week they desired ending on Sunday and we would start our meeting on Monday to continue as long as would seem desirable to the Board of Direc tors. In this way we would be holding a separate convention end yet one which would be readily available to those persons who wished to attend the Industrial Physicians and Surgeons meeting who could not get away for more than one meeting time a year. This suggestion is made with the best interest of industrial hygiene and our --association in mind, but would be dependent on the arrangements that the Executive Committee could make with other groups.
