WATSON: . At your request, Mr. R. J. Schmidt visited Pipe Line Service Company in Chicago on January 24, 1967. He visited with Mr. R. Lantz, vice-president and purchasing agent, and with Mr. E. Robertson, who is in charge of their plant operations. The purpose of this visit was to familiarize them with the methods and problems in the manufacture of mastic pipe coatings. Mr. Schmidt reviewed with them most of the important technical aspects of making mastic coating and applying it to pipe. Included were types and gradings of aggregates, types and sources of asbestos, grades of asphalt, grades of mastic, and methods used to extrude the mastic around the pipe. Also dis cussed were the significance and expected levels of values on specific tests on mastic pipe coatings. Mr. Lantz inquired about the possibility of licensing the Somastlc trademark. He was referred to .ay office for information on this subject. Mr. Lantz also inquired about the possible future technical assistance if they decided to proceed with the mastic coating venture. We advised him that it was feasible to obtain additional assistance. He should contact Mr. C. M. Foard for this assistance. Mr. Lantz also suggested that such assistance should result in their becoming a loyal customer of Chevron Asphalt Company. He also mentioned that Chevron Asphalt Company would be given an opportunity to negotiate on future pipe enamel orders.
