Twait UCC 022340 Pg. 9 L.H. 4 Asbestos Insulation in Sampler Shed Asbestos insulation is used in the sampler shed adjacent to the Analyzer Building. This appears to be the only potential source for inhalation of asbestos fibers in the unit* and it was reported to the Team that some personnel used dust masks when working in this area. Recommendation Although the asbestos insulation in this building is presently contained and does not present an exposure concern, consideration should be given to replacing this small quantity of insulation with asbestos-free insulation to eliminate all sources of exposure to asbestos fibres from the unit. (Asbestos gaskets and valve packing are not significant exposure concerns). L.H. 5 IH Monitoring for IPA Exposures No program currently exists for periodic monitoring of unit personnel for inhalation exposures to process chemicals. Recommendation The Team endorses the current unit efforts to use the R&D Department's IH Monitoring Strategy to develop a program for this unit. Although IPA inhalation exposures do not appear to be a concern, it is recommended that 8-hour personnel exposure data be recorded to establish that no overexposures are occurring. Q MINOR CONCERNS AND OBSERVATIONS Monogog^les are not uniformly worn in the catalyst mixing area. Signs are only on the west side of area. Anyone entering from the east side won't see them. 2. The empty catalyst containers are not all punctured per S.O.P. A better tool is needed to go through both cardboard and plastic containers. 3. There is a small IPAJeak on both Spent IPA manways. ^(^4?) The steam tracers are not all replaced or back in service on P.S.V.'s --' after testing. 5. The fresh ethylene filter safety valve (PSV145-40) is leaking through. 6. The valve stem on the bypass valve of MV105-10 is well down into the wheel. . . cont'd.. .10 UCC 022341
