With reference to our conversation of yesterday pertaining to the ~ fire proofing of St. Francis we are pleased to submit the ted this information will be Hospital Project Beech following information given to the architect Grove Indiana It is anticipaBohlen Burns | and Associates 1308 North Meridian St. Indianapolis Indiana 46202 for consideration of approval of Pyrospray Fire Proofing i Some time ago a structural engineer in Philadelphia was inquiring as to the amount of asbestos which would be installed in a building taking into consideration various fireproofing fireproofing products This par- ticular job encompassed a 4 hour beam rating a Currentl ouyr Pyrospray Type I Fire Proofing formulation contains a _e 32 Chrysotile 3/8 thickness asbestos by weight For the application required a of Pyrospray would be applied to the beam surface sa Thus the total amount of asbestos present per square foot of ex- _ * posed surface would be 0.11 pounds / Kote Fire Proofing is manufactured by W. R. Grace Company and * is currently formulated using 10 by weight Chrysotile asbestos To produce the fire retardant rating a 1/2 thickness of material would be required and the resulting asbestos content per square foot 7 based on a 22 pound per cubic foot density would be 0.09 pounds When comparing the two products it can be noted the asbestos con- a tent based on the volume of material installed becomes insignificant In New York City the Commissioner of Air Resources and the Adminis- trator of Environmental Protection have recently issued stringent rules pertaining to the installation of all sprayable materials cementitious materials included fire proofing : eS ary a PLAINTIFF'S EXHIBIT * 0346942 . 4 __Mr Bruce Morford Circle Company , June 12 1970 . ' Inc. >" 001378 Page 2 These rules basically pertain to adequate protection to the workmen proper tarping of the buildings to prevent spray from blowing throughout the city and requirements as to proper clean and oe housekeeping The situation had become very bad in the city and the- manufacturers agree with the city officials that these precautions should be heeded - : With respect to fire proofing installed in buildings in areas which are to be used as air plenums we are pleased to state that Pyrospray of Type I meets the latest G.S.A. requirements We are enclosing a copy of air erosion test report as well as a copy a reprint describing the test procedure and the requirements established by G.S.A. Some time ago the Sprayed Mineral Fiber Manufacturers Association en- Environmental . : gaged the services of William R. Bradley and Associates Health Consultants to determine any presence of asbestos fibers in a the air of buildings which had been fire proffed with Sprayed Mineral .. Fiber products You will note from the enclosed report that the determin ation by air sampling and microscopic evaluation revealed that there was no asbestos fiber of respirable size in the work environment of the ve buildings studied Please note that it is stated in the summary of - the report that there was no exposure of dust in general that would lead to ~~ lung involvement on the part of employees or the general public using ~ the structures tested The studies determined that there was greater exposure to dust of any nature outdoors than in the areas of the occu- . pied buildings For your interest we are also enclosing a copy of a study recently conducted in England entitled A Dust Survey Carried Out in Buildings Incorporating Asbestos Materials in Their Construction Please note the last paragraph on Page 145 which reads as follows In our present state of knowledge the dust concentrations = found in completed buildings incorporating asbestos - products in their construction are not considered likely to constitute a hazard to the health of the occupants ; > ; We appreciate your interest and concern relative to asbestos fibers and hope a number you realize that a lot of the adverse comments of people who are technical and uninformed have been by of the facts We hope what is being submitted will prove of value and as additional information becomes availablwee will be more than pleased to keep you informed a ~ Very truly yours jca Enclosures Products Spray f_ H 0346943 0346943
