Turner February 28, 1986 SAFE WORK PERMIT GUIDELINE VIS1A Within the last year, we have had several injuries caused by "free" caustic in our fresh VCM supply. Our VCM suppliers have all been notified of this problem and have taken action to prevent a recurrence. However, it is not possible to ensure that there is absolutely no caustic in any of our future VCM shipments. For the purpose of Issuing safe work permits, we must assume that our fresh VCM contains caustic and use the following guidelines: Caution must be exercised when breaking any line or vessel which has contained fresh VCM. The minimum precaution will be to require a face shield, fresh air mask and rubber gloves be worn. If the line or vessel is overhead, then the permit should also require a slicker suit. The only exceptions to these guidelines will be railcar unloading connections, replacing unloading hoses and uork on the Corken unloading compressors.
