Hoyle Chem Biology Research .. 1701 Building : INSULATION I have attached three Analytical Laboratory reports of analysis obtained on samples of insulation. The pink ^ material referred to is New Care. Temp 1500 manufactured by Carey Corporation. The (B) sample referred to is a material I found in stock at 266 building. The source is unknown. Will you please advise if these samples are considered hazardous? Maintenance Technology Center 824 Building cc: R. Anderson, 222 E. Stephenson, Purch., 47 W.L. Weimer, 24 Enc. Black Maintenance Technology center 824 Building Subject: Insulation Sample A referred to in the report from the Midland Analytical Laboratories Number AL037613 appears to be essentially all non-crystalline material with no evidence of either asbestos or quartz in mere than trace amounts. Dust generated from this material could be considered nuisance dust and would require control at 10 mg total weight per cubic meter of air sampled or to 30 million particles per cubic foot using the standard which is most restrictive under the circumstances. The sample identified as B was primarily asbestos, although the type of asbestos described was different than the most common type of asbestos used generally in the United States. 1 believe that we would be required to control the dust from this material according to standards for asbestos as presently required under the Occupational Safety and Health Act. This would presently require that concentrations in the air be below 5 fibers per milliliter of air sampled with the fibers being greater than 5 microns in length. There is a proposal which is being presented to OSHA which will call for lowering the 5 fibers to 2 fibers per t"'1^ i^ ^ t0**. As you know, the present policy of the Midland Division is not to use insulation containing asbestos. H. RVHcjyle Industrial Hygiene Section Chemical Biology Research 1701 Euilding seb ) i uuuuuuy
