PRESIDENTS ANNUAL REPORT TO THE STOCKHOLDERS
OF THE
ST. JOSEPH LEAD COMPANY
FOR THE FISCAL YEAR ENDING DECEMBER 31, 1915.
GENERAL. The curtailment of output begun in the fourth quarter of the year 1914 was
continued until the middle of March, 1915, when a growing demand for your company's product enabled your management to resume full production.
The combined net income of the St. Joseph Lead Company and its affiliated companies for the year ending December 31, 1915, was $2,853,863.52.
Dividends to the amount of $854,980.05 were paid from income during the year 1915.
The average price received for lead at East St. Louis for the year was $90.00 a ton as compared with $74.00 for the previous year.
The output of pig lead at the smelter for the year 1915 was 84,356 tons as compared with 77,404 tons produced in the year 1914.
FINANCIAL. The mortgage on the property of the Doe Run Lead Company which fell
due March 1, 1915, was extended by a three-year loan at 6% with the Farmers Loan & Trust Company, the mortgage being kept alive and new notes issued which were endorsed by the St. Joseph Lead Company. These new notes less commissions and all expenses netted the company 98.
On January 19, 1915, the St. Joseph Lead Company sold to Messrs. White, Weld & Company and Smith, Moore & Company $500,000. par value additional of its Gold Notes at 94 and interest, the proceeds being used to retire the out standing loan of the St. Francois County Railroad Company which had been guaranteed by the Mississippi River & Bonne Terre Railway and to finance the purchase of an additional amount of Doe Run Lead Company stock. In October the Mississippi River & Bonne Terre Railway called and paid its outstanding Equipment Notes and on December 31, 1915, the St. Joseph Lead Company called and paid the outstanding Gold Notes. The reduction of the indebtedness of the St. Joseph Lead Company and its affiliated companies during the year 19x5 amounts to $2,428,313.07.

LABOR. Labor conditions in the district are satisfactory. A bonus of 10% has been
paid to labor since the high price of lead in June.
NEW CONSTRUCTION. New construction work has been light throughout the year. Details will be
found in the operating reports.
MINES AND MILLS. Detailed reports of operations are attached.
SMELTER. The smelter has been run to the limit of its capacity since June. The
desilverizing plant which was finished in the early part of the year was finally put into operation in December. The company is now in a position to furnish cor roding lead as well as its ordinary product.
It is interesting to note that living conditions have been so improved at Herculaneum, that the proportion of married men in our employ has very greatly increased and the public school has grown from 50 to 400 pupils.
DOE RUN LEAD COMPANY. Since my last report the St. Joseph Lead Company has acquired by purchase 97 shares of the Doe Run Lead Company's stock.
MISSISSIPPI RIVER & BONNE TERRE RAILWAY. The railroad as well as the lead company has had a record year. Both the Interstate Commerce Commission and the Public Service Commission of the State of Missouri have had their valuation experts for months on the road mak ing careful inventories and surveys for the purpose of valuation. Up to this writing we have received no appraisal report from either Commission. This work of appraisal has been of very distinct advantage to the company and has enabled us to place a present day value on our equip ment and to begin a systematic charge of depreciation which will enable us to set aside monthly a sufficient sum to keep the equipment up to its present efficiency. In order to reduce the book value of equipment to its present value we wrote off in June, 1915, $234,412.23, and since that time have been charging

off monthly about $4,240.24. Our petition to the Public Service Commission of Missouri for relief from the present passenger rate of two cents a mile has not yet been answered.
BONNE TERRE FARMING & CATTLE COMPANY.
The principal matter of interest in regard to the company for the past year has been the sale of houses on the installment plan to employes of the company at Herculaneum, also the building by the company of additional houses at this point.
New York, February 21, 1916.
