12 121 BRAKING SYSTEM July 1973 () 141 Page 23 A SERIES 12 121 BRAKES-INSPECT (includes: remove and install wheels and brake drums, remove dust, check moving parts. For operation, system for leaks, shoes for wear, adjust foot and handbrake where applicable) 1. Raise the front and rear of the vehicle and fit axle stands. 2. Remove all wheels and brake drums as detailed in operations 12 311 and 12 313. 3. Remove dust, with a pressure air line, from the brake assemblies and brake drums. 4. Check all moving parts for operation, i.e. rear automatic adjusting mechanisms, retracting springs and wheel cylinder pistons. 5. Check the front brake adjusters. 254 mm (10 in.) brakes; check the serrations on the adjuster plate and correct engaging of the pawl. 317 mm (12 in.) brakes; ensure the adjuster peg is secure within the mechanism and the peg and shoe web slots are liberally lubricated with molybdenum disulphide grease. 6. Check the position and condition of all brake hoses, pipes and connections. 7. Check the wheel cylinders and hoses for leaks. 8. Check brake shoes for wear and drums for scoring and grooves. 9. Check for free movement of the parking brake cables, parking brake rods and parking brake levers, adjust as necessary. 10. Check brake master cylinder and/or booster for tightness and correct function. 11. Check and if necessary adjust push rod to master cylinder pistori clearances as detailed in _____ operation 12 335.________________ __________ NOTE: Avoid inhaling brake shoe dust during brake shoe repair or inspection. 12 141 BRAKE SYSTEM - BLEED SINGLE LINE UNBOOSTED 1. Remove the reservoir cap and top up with approved brake fluid. 2. Remove the rubber dust cap from the left hand rear bleed nipple and fit a bleed tube. 3. Place the other end of the tube in a glass jar containing a sufficient amount of approved brake fluid to keep the end of the pipe immersed during the bleeding operation. /V-Seizes - 19^9 '4. Unscrew the bleed valve approximately half a turn. Fully depress the brake pedal and release to the off position. Brake fluid and/or air should have been pumped into the jar. if not unscrew the bleed valve further. 5. Continue to depress the brake pedal, pausing after each return stroke, until the fluid seen to enter the jar is clean and free from air bubbles. 6. Depress the brake pedal fully and maintain in this position whilst the bleed valve is tightened. NOTE: Do not over tighten the bleed valve. 7. The master cylinder reservoir must be topped up with approved brake fluid during the bleed ing operation. HFM - 005876
