Bowers Dote: Copies: November 5, 1976 Monthly Report October, 1976 Environmental Laboratory A total of 498 samples were analyzed for 2585 parameters during the month of October. Routine analysis of the samples from the pond system and samples from streams flowing into the pond system were run for environmental services. Well waters were analyzed for fourteen parameters. Routine analysis were run on the thirteen wells around George Pond. Routine analysis was rur. on the cooling tower waters for each plant during the month of October. Chlorides were run on the Methanol-Ammonia and Nitric Acid cooling tower waters and process waters from various locations in the plant throughout the month. Chlorines were run on the cascade cooling water routinely. Dehydration column bottoms for the No. 1 and No. 2 plants are analyzed daily with results phoned to the Amines controL room. Total nitrogens were run on cooling tower water and various points in the Amines plant to check for ammonia leaks. Samples were analyzed from the Amines Plants to aid in material balance evaluation. Assistance was given to the Methanol-Ammonia Plant on the analysis of contaminated MeOH product. Twelve samples were analyzed for ammonia tc determine ammonia contamination o: air in the nitric acid control room, the compressor building, and the ammonia control room. Nitrogen, oxides were determined for the nitric acid plant at the three locations of the masar unit utilizing the Antek total nitrogen analyzer and the ZPA Method 7. AP00054511 R. R. The analysis revealed a 2.4% content of total nitrogen and 344 ppm of sodium. It was apparently residue from, tar pumped from. Amines and used for boiler fuel. Amines Air Monitoring Analytical development is being continued for the Amines Air Pollution Program. Determination of retention times for possibLe contaminants from each Amines product was made along with aschedule for calibration of the procedure and adsorption efficiency of silica gel tubes. Wolfe Copies: Re: Monthly Repo rt September, 1976 Amines Lab assistance on the on-stream chromatographs and routine chromatographs have continued during MEA MIPA production runs. Two on-stream chromatgraphs have been put in service - one monitoring MEA product and one rvtonitoring MLPA product. Lab work is continuing on designing a better VPC procedure for measuring trace quantities of MEA in product DMA. The Calgon procedure was tried but appears inferior to our present VPC method. Lab work was begun for determining trace quantities of water in various amine products by a VPC proerdurs. Preliminary work indicates a 20' X 1/8" i.d. Teflon column packed with 5% Igepal - 880 on Chromosorb T may be satis factory for methyl and ethyl amine products. Work will continue on this project. St. Gabriel Amines Plant Lab help was continue^ at the St. Gabriel plant for MEA start-up. Two technicians and myself were present during the start-up. The plant start-up presented no analytical problems and product MEA was within the specifications. Methanol Plant a* Samples of methanol have continued to be analyzed "or alkalinity. Methanol inlet and exit the ton exchange unit at Mobile storage have been monitored periodically for alkalinity and VPC scans have been made to determine the DMA content. RWW/wt R. W. Wolfs AP00054513
