Benzene Regulated Area
During the last month numerous area samples have been taker, around the Ail Separator and oil recovery area near the holding pond. The results of these samples show that normal benzene levels in and around the skinnner sump are above 1 ppm. Within the next week, I should have a complete sample grid charted with the actual levels measured.
The area in question will have to be set up as a regulated area, even though personnel dosimeter levels are below 0.5 ppm. Basically, the area involved is the concrete slab on the northwest corner of the holding pond. The majority of the contamination is from the sump.
Please examine the operations of the oil recovery equipment within the next few days. If there is no operational reason for the high levels, then regulation of the area will have to continue until the quench blowdown stripper is put in service later in the year, assuming expected results are obtained.

xvBenzene^Area Sampling
Attached are the results of some area sampling around the API Separator and Holding Pond. The effects of the wind on the results are rather clear.
These results are not significantly different from similar samples in the past. They continue to show substantial exposure potential in both these areas. I had anticipated seeing some improvement due to the Quench blowdown stripper but this does not appear to be the case.
I believe the stripper still the best hope we have in reducing this area of benzene contaminati if we can make it do a good job.

Benzene Sample Results (API Separator Area)
Shown on an attached area sketch are the locations and results of benzene monitors placed in the API Separator area on December 23, 1981. The results indicate no material change from previous data collected in this area.
