KA/ser TMENt Dear Mr. Grigg: This is in response to your letter of December 27, requesting Health and Environmental information in the use of asbestos fibres. As you recall, we have discussed this verbally, and I have had the pleasure of two meetings with Mr. Sheahan at Antioch. I shall try to put down on paper the essence of the information and discussions as they may apply to your manufacturing and to the end use of your products which include asbestos. Please bear in mind that there are myriads of publications , regulations, agencies and people involved in this Health-Environmental bit, and that there is a rather high degree of conflicting facts ( and fancies). Time will aid in removing some of the current emotionalism, but in the meantime our industry program should be to get our houses in order. Now to your request (I shall refer to your item numbers): 1. There is evidence that mesotheliomas and neoplasms may be caused by asbestos dust. The fibres we produce are 100% Chrysotile. 39 i/r> nnor Ralph W. Grigg -2 April 11, 1972 2. a. Wet: perhaps water solvable bags Dry: Respirators, good housekeeping, dust emission control. b. Cut and fill or pulper disposal. Shroud and hood with negative pressure vacuuming. c. Per Govt.regulations ( Bur. or Mines or OSHA). d. Unknown at present e. Not possible 3. Joint Compounds Respirators where dust prevails. Good housekeeping and monitoring. Wall Textures: Ceiling Textures: Slurry into nopple. Disposal into bags a. Enclosed mixing b. Minimize overspray, respirators, good housekeeping. c. Clean up while product still wet. 4. a. Federal: Environmental Protection Agency and Occupational and Safety Health Act regulations. b. Some of those are in process, but have not been made effective. I hope this will assist you.
