Our March 21 letter (copy enclosed) listed the sub stances for which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Carcinogen Assessment Group (CAG) planned to prepare pre liminary risk assessments. Preliminary risk assessments for the following substances now are being typed in final form for review and approval by Dr. Anderson:
1. Allyl Chloride 2. Benzyl Chloride 3. Ethylene Oxide 4. Manganese 5. Methyl Iodide 6. Phosgene 7. Toluene 8. 0-, in-, p-Xylene
These documents should be available to us next week, and we will forward them as soon as they are released.
CAG has not updated the entire schedule set forth in our March 21 letter, but we have been advised that draft preliminary risk assessments for the following substances are scheduled to be prepared by September 7:

We doubt that CAG will release these drafts, but we will continue to monitor CAG's progress and forward reports as they are available.
Also enclosed are the forward and index to a set of notebooks recently compiled by CAG containing the risk assessments and other information it has prepared through July 31. As indicated in the forward, CAG does not plan to release all these documents. We will obtain informally the documents relating to airborne substances that we do not already have that CAG will release, and will consult with you about filing a Freedom of Information Act request for the remainder. We also will try to obtain some of the documents relating to other programs and offices. If you or other members wish us to obtain particular documents, please let us know.

We understand that EPA currently plans to have risk assessments prepared during 1979 by EPA's Carcinogen Assessment Group (CAG) on the airborne substances listed below. Type I risk assessments are short, preliminary analyses, like those we sent to you on March 1. Type II risk assessments are the more detailed analyses that, in the past, have been made before detailed emission standards have been adopted.
The schedule is only tentative. We understand that it represents the times desired by the Strategies and Air
Standards Division, and that the CAG does not expect to be able to meet this plan. (Specific dates indicate reports that have been issued.)

These risk assessments and memoranda were prepared at the request of program offices in the Environmental Protection Agency. The agenda of work completed July, 1978 through July, 1979 is arranged chronologically by program office and serves as the index for this notebook.

follows this foreword. A two volume set O'f notebooks was
