Lane Dear Mr. Skahill: On July 31, 1974, a second special survey for the determination of vinyl chloride monomer in workroom air was conducted at the Red Oak Plant. Air samples were collected both on the person of the PTC extrusion machine operator and of the general air directly above the extrusion head of the Mo. 2 JVC extrusion machine which was operating. A new Model 8P-1 Sipin personal sampling pump was used to collect 3 consecutive air samples on the extrusion machine operator. Each of the 3 air samples was obtained by pulling workroom air through one charcoal tube (MSA Fart So. 459004). the sampling flow rate used was 57 milliliters per minute. The total workshift time covered by the 3 air samples was two hours and three minutes. So detectable vinyl chloride monomer was found in any of these 3 air samples. the 3 general air samplea, which were collected directly above the extrusion head of the Mo. 2 extrusion machine, were obtained at a flow rate f 30 milliliters per minute by using an MSA Model 0 personal Sampling puzgh.a (MSA Ifcrt Bo. 456058) with an air-bleed valve located between the pump and ucc 067783 Mr. J. H. gkahlll -2- September 13, 1974 the charcoal tabs. Each air sample v&i collected la one large charcoal tube which was prepared especially for this purpose by the Cleveland-Edgemter Laboratory. The entire equipment, as described, was calibrated prior to use with a soap-film flometer. The total workshlft time covered by these 3 general air samples was 2 hours and 45 alnates. Ho detectable amount of vinyl chloride monomer was found in any of the 3 general air samples. Other operating areas were observed, but no air samples were collected. Ho hasard was noted.
