Tba "records study" would be to determine specific causes of death aad longevity on foraer loaf-tern eaployees of the industry. This study will be part of the total fibrous aaterials study which has been uadexvay at the U.S.P.H.S. for several years. This would be another parallel but separate study similar to the fibrous aaterials being studied now or would be included ia a study at a later date. Certain laforaatloa aust initially be furnished by the ccBpanles who canpose the Industry to characterise the Industry at the present tins and enable the eventual selection of cohorts of 3>000 each froa the insulation and the textile portion of the industry. These cohorts would be part of a longitudinal study to include environmental, clinical aad epldenlologleal studies to ascertain the health effects, if any, associated with varying degrees and types of employee exposure within the industry. The information Is required from each company concerning the pleats of the coepeay which manufacture glass for cither Insulation or textile* or alneral wool. The nature of the information required Is sham in Attachment 1. Mr. Barn hart, the Secretary of NIMA, will tend a letter to each Itabtr of the Occu pational Health aad Safety Cnewil ttee whose responsibility it will be to see that the desired information from their company Is developed end forwarded to Or. Lewis Crnlley end also to notify the Secretary of KXNA when the in formation has been forwarded to Or. Specific detailed information, as required, will be sent directly to the USPHS by the individual companies. Or. Cralley suggested that tha Coosittee send a letter to Dr. Murray Brown, Director of the Division of Occupational Health, U.S.P.H.S. in Washington, D.C., advising him that HIMA desires a study by the U.S.P.H.S. of the in dustry. The letter should include a copy of the resolution passed by the Board on May 16 concerning their desire for the study. It should include the importance of the industry to the national economy sad the desire of industry to promote the health of its employees and its customers through a cosplete understanding of tha health effects, if any, of exposure to the products of the industry. Zt should also allude to the April 3 letter by Dr. Cralley, Attachment 2, as veil as tha Juna 5 masting of the Ccmnlttee with Dr. Cralley end the steps presently being taken in regard to the "records study" vithin the industry. Lastly, it should alludt to the desire of tha Committee to meet vlth Dr. Brown and Dr. Crmllty to discuss ths studies desired by tha industry. Dr. Crallay urged each company to continue to support raaaareh both in the laboratory and vithin the plants such as that work which la being dene by the industry at tha Industrial Hygiene foundation which includes work on fibrous materials; University of Cincinnati, Kattaring Laboratory, dust and erosion studies; and environmental and employee studies of the OwensComing Fiber (Haas Hawark Plant. PPCAJIORAI PIKXHAM FOB ZDCIA WtGIOHAL CEGAWIZATICWS At tha Nay 16, 1967, ISA Board Meeting, this responsibility was placed under tha Occupational Health and Safety Coosittee. Zt was to be a Sub committee chaired by Mr. Clifford Sheckler. The Board recommended that this Subccnlttee develop recommendations in regard to tha continuation of the educational program which would include the notarial to be pre sented, the various nettings at which it would be presented and tha people and funds required to carry out the proposed program. Nr. Sheckler requested that his Subcoamlttee consist of the following F.I. Bdvards I. Auricehio I. Metier 3 Mr. Sheckler advised he would aeet with hie Coonittec and develop the data requested by the Board for consideration by the Occupational Health aM Safety Canalttee. He flurthsr advleed that his Subcommittee would not be able to aeet with the Occupational Health and Safety Coamlttee of EDCTU in Montreal scheduled for early July nor would he have any guidance for this Coamlttee at this tine. Mr. John Vyverberg suggested that the Subconmittee work with the Regional Occupational Health and Safety Coomittees of the XDCKA in the development of educational programs for their regions and, If possible, involve then in at least a portion of the prograa presentation. Mr. Clifford Sheckler indicated a need to be aore specific than heretofore in future presentations to the 3DCKA groups particularly in the areas of health and safety prevention techniques and in handling workmen's cementa tion elalas. In this regard, Dr. Grant suggested consideration be given to advising ZDCHA of sources available to assist the contractors in effecting appropriate environmental controls and efficient handling of workmen's com pensation claims. Dr. Cralley suggested that the appropriate 8tate occu pational health personnel be nade aware of the regional meetings and the advice intended to be tendered at such meetings since the State has the responsibility for such matters within their own States.
