It appears that they have received these instructions from their New York Office and I would j very much like to have your comments before taking any action in the matter. It has been Dr. Boldero's practice in the past to examine from j j j time to time,^once a year or eighteen monthsj the main people in the * different laboratories, but he has not made t amination. A - Bevan Esc., Ethyl Export Corporation, Thames House, Eillbank, S.Yl.l Dear Ray, Safety Rules for Handling Ethyl Gasoline V e have received a communication from the Standard Inspection Laboratory, a portion of which reads as under: . "Employees who are required to perform evaporation tests (such as distillation or gum tests) on Ethyl Gasoline shall be specially assigned to such work by the man in charge of the laboratory. He shall have such employees examined Ly the local medical office, orior to permitting them to undertake the work. The local medical office will arrange to have these employees re-examined each six months. There shall be no exception to this rule except when the number of Ethyl Gasoline samples handled by a given man does not exceed one per week. . "Evaporation tests on Ethyl Gasoline shall be performed under con ditions which prevent escape of tetraethyl lead vapors into the atmosphere of the room where men are working. It is considered that the use of an ice cooled condenser and a relatively small quantity of material satisfy this condition for the case of ordinary A.S.T.M naphtha distillation tests. All other evaporation tests shall be me.de in a droit hood or with equivalent provision for the removal of vapours. "A.11 other tests of Ethyl Gasoline involve no hazard greater than that incident to ordinary commerical handling of the material. No special precautions ere required in the laboratory except the common sense avoidance of contact with-the skin and spilling upon clothing. "Rules concerning the handling of tetraethyl lead in concentrations higher then 0.1% are unchanged. These include stringent requirements to avoid . contact with the skin or inhalation of vapours. Men handling such concen trated solutions are subjected to medical examination every three months". I presume that these regulations have been prepared in conjunction with your people in the .States. If we put them into operation here it would seem to imply that Dr. Boldero would have an additional number of men to examine periodically. We estimate tnat tnere are about 7 people in the London Laboratories who fall K B 0007103 2 within the category, and there may be one or two at Installations, but they are borderline -cases. If you would inform me whether these individuals should be added to Dr. Boldero's list I will arrange.to submit their names to you together with any other relevant particulars. . So far as place of examination is concerned, we have our own Medical Office here, and could arrange to have the individuals standing ty at the appropriate time in order not to waste any of Dr. Boldero's time.
