Dr. Richard Brunning declined to participate due to ill health that would preclude a five year commitment. He was very interested in the study and suggested as a replacement, Dr. Robert McKenna, MD. Dr. McKenna is at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He is a Fellow of the College of American Pathologists and of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. He is also a past president of the latter organization. Dr. Larson, the clinical hematologist on the SRP, agreed that he would be a good choice. Dr. Larson cautioned that like most hematopathologists, he would be extremely busy and might not have time to participate. Dr. Larson suggested as an alternate, Dr. Kathy Foucar, MD. Dr. Foucar is a Professor in the Dept of Pathology at the University of New Mexico and is Director of Pathology Services at the University Hospital. I don't know any more about her background other than Dr. Larson's recommendation. She too, wil also be busy. This brings up an alternative to filling the hematopathologist spot, at least at this time. With the individuals that we have confirmed as well as the hematopathology, statistics and additional epidemiologist positions we would have 11 members of the SRP. The oversight committee had indicated a desire to create 2 unfilled positions that could be filled by the SRP at their pleasure. That would result in 13 members on the SRP instead of the originally planned 12. This situation arises because we added Helmut Greim as an ad hoc European member without a specific are of expertise slot for him to occupy. Dr. Rice of IARC already held the general toxicology position. To keep to the original plan, we could choose not to have a hematopathology position a priori leaving it up to the SRP to add one if they see a need. I do not see this as a problem in that Dr. Larson is knowledgeable regarding the types of pathology techniques needed for our proposed research and Dr. Irons is planning on having a blue ribbon panel of three hematopathologists SHELL-MCCLURG-051615 available to review slides and ambiguous cases when needed. Bear in mind that we have 2 hematologists confirmed on the SRP. (Dr. Mark Minden has accepted). So, the options are: 1.) Proceed to fill the hematopathologist slot with either Dr. McKenna or Dr. Foucar (I suggest in that order) or another person if anyone has a suggestion. 2.) Eliminate the hematopathologist slot and keep the SRP at 12. Actually at this point, I lean toward option 2, but I would start with Dr. McKenna if the decision is to go ahead and fill it. If any of you feel strongly that we need to have a conference call, especially in the case of dropping the previously approved hematopath position, please respond ASAP so that we can set up a call.
