Dear Dr. Hutchinson: I am sending you herev^&^jh^results obtained on samples sent to us 'in the case of I am at a loss to explain these results, They are most unusual, although they are not beyond the realm of possibility. However, I consider it very likely that one of tvo things has happened to produce this strange discrepancy between the blood and urine values; either the blood samples were contaminated in being collected and approximately to the same degree, or else the urine sample vas extremely dilute in the case of a man who had taken a considera ble quantity of water shortly before the sample vas collected. The only other possibility, - and this is remote because X have only seen one such case, - is that this man may have a type of nephritis, in which lead along with other electrolytes are excreted in very low concentration by reason of the kidney damage. It seems probable that the failure in such a case arises from the inability of the kidney to concentrate the secreted urine. In any case this is a very interesting situation, and it is one that should be investigated further. .Accordingly I suggest that you obtain additional samples at the earliest possible time, using every precaution to avoid the slightest possibility of contaminating the blood sample. If the blood results should be confirmed, the evidence of serious lead exposure can be accepted as valid. Hovever, we shall not be able to interpret the pre sent results without further samples. Incidentally, in con sidering the charges in this case, whether they are directed to you or to the Industrial Commission, we shall take into account out- own interest in this kind of a problem, and naturally the bill accordingly.
