DATE October 14, 1975 SUMMARY Monitored Tank Car Cleaning Area employing Bruel and Kjaer Sound Level Meter Model 2205 while steam cleaning and testing pressurized cars. Survey results revealed that approved hearing protection is necessary whenever cars are being depressurized, steamed, and dried out. Langner - 1803 OO 011624 CONFIDENTIAL 10/14/75 Monitored Tank Car Cleaning Area for noise with the Bruel and Kjaer Sound Level Meter Model 2205 while rail cars were being steamed out and while pressurized cars were being depressurized. During steaming operations the area near the manway of the car, where the steamhose was attached, reached a level of 112 dBA. The platform area along north side of car had sound levels of 103 dBA on the east end, 107 dBA on the west end, and 104 dBA at the base of the walkway leading out to the manway. The entire Tank Car Cleaning Area under the roof averaged 96 to 97 dBA while " steaming" was in progress (see enclosed diagram). On August 22, 1975, when pressurized cars were tested and depressurized, there was a three minute period in which noise levels ranged between 124 and 129 dBA. This level of noise requires hearing protection at all times regardless of the amount of time spent in the area. The survey results dictate that approved hearing protection must be worn by everyone in the work area whenever noisy operations are in progress.
