McCarville Director of Environmental Affairs Monsanto Company 800 North Lindberg Blvd. St. Louis, MO 63166 Dear Dr. McCarville: If you and the management of Monsanto are concerned about the misinformation that the public is hearing about chemicals in the environment and their effect on human health -- about the "cancer-causing" effects of trace amounts of TCEs, PCBs, dioxins, pesticides, and on and on -- the project described by the enclosed prospectus and videotape is one you will want to support. It's a proposal for a 28-minute documentary film to be produced under the auspices of the American Council on Science and Health. The film will be shown to the general public over public service and cable television and to school and adult groups through a program of sponsored distribution. The purpose of the film, as stated in the Executive Summary, is to "confront and counter the exaggerations and misconcep tions that are leading the American public to believe that the use and disposal of man-made chemicals is a major threat to human health." To accomplish this, the film will draw on the research and opinions of some of America's most distinguished scientists and medical experts, including Dr. Bruce Ames, the noted biochemist and geneticist from the University of California at Berkeley, whose appearance you may have seen recently on the television show 20/20. Others who have expressed an interest in appearing in the film are listed on page 19 of the proposal and include such notables as Surgeon General Everett Koop; Nobel Laureate Dr. Norman Borlaug; and Dr. Stephen Sternberg of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research. As a member of the ACSH Film Committee, I am writing to a few companies that I think might be interested in helping to underwrite this project. We need 12 to 15 companies willing to invest $25,000 each to make it happen. Needless to say. Cooper will be among them.
