Texas City, Texas June 13, 1962 Red Residue in VCM at Cary Chemicals, Inc. Letter, H. Kruse to J, Young, 6/28/62 T. E. Shirley J. W. Kangable O. C. Jones J. L. Young We have examined the red residue given to us by T. Shirley and can oiler very little in the way oi identification. XRF examination indicates it contains iron and nickel with lower amounts of other metals. Infrared and ultraviolet scans were made, but not enough material was available for definite con clusions to be reached. Attached are a copy of the certificate of quality obtained on the car prior to shipment and a Control Lab chromatographic analysis of the retained sample rerun on May 24, 1962. (Note: Car number on certificate and retained sample is MONX 21061 whereas their letter indicates MXGP 21061.) No unusual amounts of impurities are present. A large sample of retained sample evaporated down revealed about 16 ppm of white residue and no pinkish color. The absence of color in our retained sample and the abaence of complaints from other sources lead me to believe that either the tank car was not clean or that their sampling container may have been contaminated. Possible sources of the pink color might be an oxidation product of phenol or a reaction product of iron chloride with phenol (if water were present). We* d be very interested in getting a larger sample of material if future problems of this type arise. Evidently the material in question was processed before the red residue was found. kb Enclosures^ Jerry L. Price / CSV 1019440 ,r RSV0031744
