Escbelbach Personnel Manager Chemical Industrial Hygiene Personnel Governmental Industrial Hygiene Investigation March 20, 196 Trenton Attached is a communication regarding an asbestos dus^^^^^ investigation performed at the Trenton Chemical Division Plant by the State of Michigan Division of Occupational Health. Corrective action necessary to provide improved control of airborne asbestos is cited. Comments of the Industrial Hygiene Department regarding the two corrective measures included in the State communication are as follows: 1. Exhaust Ventilation System at B6. It is agreed that the ventilation system at the grinder should be placed in operable condition. 2. Exhaust Ventilation at the Disc Brake LInina Press. Compliance with the State of Michigan requirements should be provided by one of the following methods: A. Install a hood larger than the chute opening at the location where the asbestos is transferred from the metal container to the press chute. A hood face velocity of 75 feet per minute would provide satisfactory control. This type of instal lation would exhaust more air than ia removed at the present time without increasing the capture velocity. B. Increase tbs quantity of exhaust at the present system. This method of control would reduce air borne asbestos dust, but would also remove more light fibers from the ebute and may interfere with production. Lnders, General Manager Gentlemen: Gn February 13, 1969 we conducted a dust study of the various representative operations carried out in the manufacture of crake linings. Air samples were collected in the breathing zone of the workers for dust content anc compared to the limit of 5 mil lion particles ter cucic foot of air. All of our samples collected, except tv.c, -..ore below the maximum allowable concentration. ..here t.4e employee was dumping the asbestos mix from the can intc the press for disk brake pads, the dust count was slightly ateve the limit. The other sample where the limit was exceeded, ./as on the braxe lining grinder in bay b-6 wnere the ventilation to the machine was disconnected. During our visit we discussed these two machines and found tnat corrective measures were going to be taken on the press and that tne ventilation to the brake grinding machine would be reconnected. Until these changes are made, respirators should ce worn to protect the workers from over-exposure to asbestos dust. Je plan to visit your plant within the near future to examine the control measures placed on the new mixers installed to prepare the brake iir.-r.c material.
