Telephone calls were received today from both Dr. Kehoe and Howard Hesselberg reporting on the visits to Drs. Merrill, Griswold, and Linsky. ' ^ Both Dr. Kehoe and Howard Hesselberg called on Dr. Griswold on March 14 at which time others of the LAPCD staff were brought into the discussion. Apparently they were looking forward to the opportunity of meeting Dr. Kehoe and having numerous questions answered regarding the entire; lead subject. The. questions seemed to involve tetraethyl lead almost exclusively and no hesitancy seemed to exist regarding the wisdom of substituting tetramethyl lead for 'tetraethyl lead should it be considered advisable commercially. The visit to Dr. Merrill was made by Dr. Kehoe alone, and at this visit others were also invited. The names of the individuals are not immediately available, but they represented the Department of Hygiene. Again no questions were raised regarding the effect of substituting tetramethyl lead on the public health. Dr. Merrill was interested in the outcome of the future data that will be accumulated as a result of longer time investigations of lead uptake by persons handling leaded gasolines as part of their business. Incidentally, this program is being put together with Harold Porter and Dr. Curtis acting as coordinating agencies to locate appropriate spots in the refining, distribution, and sales organizations. With regard to advising the health departments of other states, the route considered best was that through the State and Territorial Health Officers Association. Dr. Merrill has been a guiding light in this organization for some time and volunteered his services in bringing the subject of tetramethyl lead to that organ ization. In this connection it is quite possible that he will have an invitation issued to Dr. Kehoe for attendance at the next meeting. The approach to Dr. Linsky was made at luncheon today by Dr. Kehoe and Howard Hesselberg. The reception by Dr. Linsky was similar to that at the other two places. It was reported that in all cases the health authorities were most appreciative of the advice given them of a new product that may be used in their areas. The attitude of each was such that it still appears very desirable to see that each is advised of the impending commercialization of tetramethyl lead just before the announcement in the press. *41 -2 No question was raised regarding the influence pump markings might have on rulings regarding the Antisubstitution Act. At least the Health Department is now advised should an approach be made to the Sealer of Weights and Measures regarding the importance of pump markings from this point of view.
