Statement showing the numbers of non-registered and registered staff employed by the PLA from end 1968 to end 1978, split to dock controls. This statement was prepared by the Industrial Relations Department in 1979. 2. Statement showing the number of registered dock workers employed at each sector of the Port from the end of 1965 to the end of 1978, prepared by the LDLB in 1979. Obviously, the PLA r.d.ws are included in these figures. Handling of Asbestos in the Port of London 1. A letter written by Bernard Furzer of the London Enclosed Docks Employers Association to Brian Golds, the PLA Solicitor, dated 19th June 1981. This sets out briefly but clearly the history of asbestos handling in the Port of London. Note that Mr.Furzer concludes that prior to 1965, asbestos was regarded as only another dusty commodity, rather than as having any risk associated with it. As I said over the telephone today, I cannot find any mention in my file of the handling of imported raw asbestos in bag form after the late 1960s, so the trade may have ceased at that time. However, it may be that exports of manufactured asbestos products continued after that date. 1 I hope that these enclosures are helpful.
