MEMORANDUM PLAINTIFFS EXHIBIT L BIR-55 d From Dst* Suijta Mr. Roelofs - BBIf January 10, 1983 SAMPLES OF FS CEMENT PRODUCTION FOR ASBESTOS REPLACEMENT WORK As we mentioned in December; we have been looking into a synthetic replacement for asbestos, Hercules Pulpex. Hercules will do the starting formulation work, trying to match physical properties of the finished cements. In order to do this they will need samples of production and "blanks", all the ingredients except the asbestos. The easiest way to do this is to take each product (Special lashing Cement, Plastic Cement, BUCA, Fibered Roof Coating, and Reflecto - n) and make a batch with all the ingredients except asbestos. Let mix and take out a 5 gallon can. Then add the asbestos, mix, and package. It will probably take a little longer to mix and the operators will have to scrape the mixer by hand instead of using solvent to wash down the asbestos on the walls of the mixer. Also include a one gallon can from that batch. Send the labeled 5 gallon blanks and 1 gallon finished samples to: Mr. Ed Engle Hercules, Inc. , Research Center Wilmington, Delaware 19899 If it will be a long time until you make Refiecto-Coat or Fiber Roof Coating, send the others first so Hercules can begin work. If you should make any Lap Cement or Quick-Setting Lap Cement, include samples and blanks of those. The computer printout of "Quantity Produced" was incorrectly assumed to be pounds. It was gallons, which leads to an approximate factor of 8 times the previous costs.
