Papageorge C. J. Smith - CC: At Sam Pickard*s request I called Dr. Ed Berger concerning a proposed meeting at the Executive Office of the President on ' September 2 to discuss PCB*s. Dr. Berger explained they had a committee chaired by Dr. Gordon Nelson who is looking into several environmental problems to decide whether it was necessary for the Government to take any specific action. He would be grateful if Monsanto would agree to sit with this small group and discuss PCB*s on the aspects of toxicity, man*s exposure to the material, inherent biological effects, and also distribution. I confirmed to Dr. Berger that we would be pleased to attend such a meeting but I could give no guarantee that we would be in a position to answer all the questions which might be raised. We specifically discussed disclosure of our production figures and it was made clear to him that our policy would not allow us to disclose such information except to responsible Government agencies who would guarantee confidentiality. He asked if we would be interested in widening the proposed meeting to include members from the various Federal agencies and I made it clear we preferred a small meeting--we are not interested in the typical FDA/tJSDA 100-200 member meeting-- he agreed.
