Box 2053 Dearborn, Michigan PLAINTIFF'S EXHIBIT Dear Sir: A group of us at the University of Maryland are presently engaged in a study of particulate emissions from motor vehicles. As a part of this study, we are interested in particles produced by the abrasion of friction surfaces such as brake linings. In a recent communication to us, Dr. Pierson of your laboratory mentioned that you and your colleagues have done considerable work on brake lining wear. We would like to know what size particles are found during the braking process, what elements are on these particles, what temperatures are reached, and if particles produced from brake linings can be readily distinguished from particles from other sources.
