MICHIGAN 48667 TO: ALL MICHIGAN DIVISION MAJOR MANAGERS, SECTION MANAGERS, AND SUPERINTENDENTS MICHIGAN STATE ASBESTOS REGULATION A new asbestos regulation enacted by the State of Michigan requires that each employee who is involved in janitorial, maintenance, repair of equipment, or buildings and who is likely to be involved with removing, altering, or otherwise disturbing less than 25 linear feet or 50 square feet of asbestos shall receive 2 hours of awareness training on the health and safety aspects of asbestos. Instruction shall be given in the following areas: 1. Health hazards associated with asbestos exposure, including the relationship between asbestos exposure, smoking, and disease. 2. Health protection.measures to be taken to minimize the emissions of asbestos in the air, including air monitoring, protective clothing, and personal hygiene. 3. The nature of operations that could result in exposure to asbestos. 4. A description of respirators and their purpose, use, and care. 5. Appropriate protective practices including area preparation, decon tamination, and waste disposal. In order to meet the requirement of the regulation, the following information and visual aids must be used to train your employees who may remove or handle asbestos (operators, tradesmen, etc.) no later than September 25, 1986. 1. The information contained in Safety Standard S-140 and Environmental Standard E-500. 2. The audiovisual films "Asbestos Overview" and/or "Safe Removal of Asbestos" are available from Industrial Hygiene Services. Call 6-6663 to schedule for viewing. 3. Medical approval, fit testing, and respiratory training as specified in Safety Standard S-745. The above requirements are for Dow personnel who come in contact with or may remove less than 25 linear feet or 50 square feet of asbestos. If your anticipated project is in excess of this amount, please contact Industrial Hygiene Services for information as to the additional regulatory rules that apply.
