B OTH front nd
rear wheel* are no* op erated by wedge*. AH wedge* are of a floating type by which we mean that the tlot in the center of the wedge it anffictently wide to allow the cant wedge to ahift and. in' thia way, to impart a telf centering action. The wedge bolt no longer function* at an anchor eo that both ahoe* are now more energized. (See Pig.
4.)
The ute of wedge* all around provide* equal apeed of application of front and rear brake*.
In previous model*, the brake ehoee were pinned to the adjnating anchor*. In the new brake*, the adjneting ahafta are alotted ao that the upper ends of the brake shoe* are a eliding fit, permitting vertical' cboe centralisation.
Although the braking area U the seme a* on tha 1914 can, the lining U now 1*4" wide instead of 154' but it has been abortened. The choee are not eupported on the backing plate but they have sup port ends bearing egainft the anchor pine.

All drum* are equippod with an increased number of cooling fins or rib*, locrMllng cooling effect about W%.

Before itarting adjustments, make ure that hand brake lever it in fully released position.
Minor Adjustment
1. Check cros* shaft levels to see that they do not pull beyond centers.
2. Examine spring shackle studs, shock absorber links and front radius rod mountings for looseness.
8. Take up on square adjusting nut A until slight drag is felt, back off tfntil wheel is just free.
4. Equalise wheels by backing off square adjusting nut A on heaviest wheeL
NOTE: Brakes roust be cold when ad justment i* made.
Mo/or Adfattment
L Disconnect brake rods from cam levers oo front and rear brakes. Loosen clevis lock nuts at opposite ends of rods.
, 2. Take up on square adjusting out A
M until slight drag is obtained, back off umi! wheel is just free.
3. Check and adjust hand lever pa.'l rod ho a* to obtain >.V clearance between clevis pin in cross shaft lever and back of slot in hand brake rod. (See Fig. 1.)
a. Reconnect brake pul! rod* to take
out ALL bat '< 'jsh and lost motion. It is recc'i'Miv'K'ed that the length of the brake pul! rods be 1/3-'" less , than the actual distance between I cross shaft leva's and brake cam 1 lever. <SvC Fig. 2.) This slightly preloads the bystem and prevents !osf pedal motion. Check each wheel *eparately. It my wheel drags exces sively. it indicates that the rod baa f` been shortened too much.
!j 5. Set hand brake lever in first notch. Turn each wheel at leas* one com*
I plete revolution. Drag should bo i equal. If not. equalize wheels by j backing off square adjus*ing nut A (, on heaviest wheel until all turn with ______same emount of effort._________
Average tfm* for complete rellne--4 hours.

On tracks, when adjusting pedal rod to secure clearances for the hand lever rod,
adjust the pedal tod to secure a distance of 1 21/32' between the cross shaft lever position and the frame of the car. (See Fig. 3.)
When making a major adjustment, it is well to check position of front brake cam wedges as follows: With pull rods disconnected, apply front brakes by means of a 16' wrench on the front cam levers. Note angle of cam lever in applied position and, if this lever pulls past their centers, either the lining is too thin or there Is too ouch back lash in the shoe operating mechanism. If lining and drum diameter are O.fC^ replace worn or twisted parts or use cup washers inserted between upper end of push rod and internal lever.
Twisted front brake shafts are often the cause of abnormal back lash in the front brake shoe-operating mechanism.
An optional method of removing of back lash in roda in order to give correct lining
clearance at wedge end of shoes is to turn
9dju9tmg nut A until wheel drags and then back
off until just free. With band pressure only to front braking cam lever, apply brakes until
lining is just contacting drum as indicated by
wheel drag. Hold the cam level in this position and adjust length of pull rod to allow entry of
clevis pin. Insert clevis pin. Eliminate now any wheel drag bv backing off on the square adjust
ing nut A. if pull rod length has been correctly adjusted, two clickR of the square adjusting nut should free the wheel. More than three clicks indicate too much pre!oading and rod should be lengthened until wheel turns freely.
