Dear Matt: I am enclosing copies of the following documents 1 have located based on meetings with various personnel (and trust you will identify these documents or use them as appropriate in answering Interrogatories): 1. Pages referring to asbestos from a book titled Chemical Hazards of the Workplace. This book was located in our Medical Department and was likely not used by Engineering, Manufacturing, etc. 2. A 9/23/86 Standards Memorandum (numbered .0036) directing replacement of asbestos brake materials with non-asbestos materials. All individuals identified in this Memorandum are no longer with the Company. Please note that this is the Standards Memorandum identified in one of the November 11, 1986 handwritten . memos I sent you some time ago. In that sense we have closed the loop on some of this. 3. Three SCAN PAC brochures identifying some of the materials (asbestoscontaining and non-asbestos containing) referred to in the 1986 Memorandum. 1 believe "AF" stands for "asbestos-free": Please note the Caution wording at Page 11 of the brochure identifying asbestos products. 4. Copies of relevant pages from an internal "Standards" book. The sections provided cover "Friction Materials" used in some of our products. The earliest 1 could locate dates to February 1959. The Friction Materials standards were SCF-ABEX-3800 GLEASON-000053 Gleason updated in June 1959 (enclosed), April 1974 (enclosed) and 9-84 (enclosed). The 1986 Memorandum instructs that certain materials identified in the 1984 pages (M29-M31) are replaced with materials as provided for in the Memorandum. (1 believe DU is a brass or bronze material that did not contain asbestos (to our knowledge). This appears correct because it is listed under "Metallic Linings". I point this out because some of the drawings we are providing refer to DU materials.) 5. The full index of Standards Memoranda as well as the first and last Memoranda covered by the index. I looked at this to determine if there were any other applicable standards changes (none that 1 could see) and to put a timeline on these Memoranda (1981 for the first one and 1990 for the last one). 1 believe this is helpful for answering Interrogatories but not necessarily, appropriate for document disclosure (since I don't think they are directly responsive to anything other than figuring out time periods so we can answer interrogatories). 6. A 1957 listing of machine models indicating which had brakes and the brake suppliers used. 950 machines came after this document and are not included on this list. The 116s are covered by G116S-R116P and identify the Cutler Hammer #511-S4 brake used on these machines. Also enclosed are 2 pages we could locate on this brake (these are the only 2 pages we could locate at this point). 7. The machine list also refers to GE brakes for other models. These brakes appear to be covered at Page 5 of the enclosed brochure for GE brakes. Please note the references to asbestos under "Shoe Linings" at page 4. 1 may have additional information to follow.
